Paddle Board Yoga Debuts at Centennial Beach

The newest activity at Centennial Beach is making a splash this summer:  yoga on a stand up paddle board.  Paddle board yoga combines the peacefulness of floating on the water with the challenge of applying one’s core strength and balance to stay upright.

 “The class quickly sold out,” said yoga instructor Sarah Weyenberg. “Students had the option of signing up for one class at a time, but some registered for all of the classes right away.” 

Paddle board yoga is a popular fitness trend worldwide, appealing to those who like to work out outdoors and want to intensify the benefits of their yoga practice. A Healthy Living blog on HuffPost offers 10 benefits of yoga on a stand up paddle board, including its calming effect, more intense core workout and the fun of trying something new.

Facility Manager Andrea Coates planned to offer the paddle board classes this year as a pilot program and was able to purchase 6 boards.  

Amy, one of the students at the July 25 class, said that she registered for all of the paddle board yoga classes this summer.  “My daughter is taking swim lessons at Centennial Beach and I just had to try yoga,” she said.  Although she had not practiced yoga prior to the class, her experience with Pilates helped her learn the yoga poses on the board.

Although the Park District’s paddle board yoga classes are full for this season, look for more to be offered in 2018. 

Meanwhile, there is still time left to enjoy the beauty and fun of summer at the Naperville Park District. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Take advantage of Adult Float at Centennial Beach on Saturday and Sunday mornings through the end of the season.  It’s your chance to float or paddle all around the Beach on an inner tube, the perfect dose of summer relaxation. 

2. Visit Centennial Beach to swim, relax and enjoy a vacation atmosphere without leaving town.

 3. Register for a yoga class.  The Park District offers traditional yoga in beautiful spots such as the Interpretive Center at Seager Park, overlooking the peaceful woodlands. The next series begins Saturday, August 19 at 9:00 a.m.  Or enjoy yoga at Fort Hill Activity Center, where many classes are included as part of a fitness membership.  See the group exercise schedule here. Yoga also takes place in other convenient locations including the Alfred Rubin Riverwalk Community Center, the 95th Street Center and the Brooks Golf Academy Training Center at Springbrook Golf Course.
