July is National Parks and Recreation Month

The Naperville Park District board approved a resolution on June 23 to recognize the month of July as Parks and Recreation Month, which the National Recreation and Park Association celebrates annually.

“July is a peak time for enjoying time outdoors in parks,” said Executive Director Brad Wilson. “We want to take this opportunity to join with park districts across the country to highlight the benefits of parks and recreation for our community.”

The board resolution cites several key benefits of parks and recreation, including the following:

  • Provides a place for people of all ages to connect with nature
  • Provides space for popular sports, hiking, swimming and many other activities designed to promote a healthy, active lifestyle
  • Increases the economic prosperity of the community through increased property values, tourism, expansion of the local tax base, crime reduction and attracting and retaining businesses
  • Enhances environmental stewardship

Throughout the month of July, the Naperville Park District will share messages on its website at and on social media highlighting fun facts about our parks and will post invitations to explore parks and make the most of the events, programs and destinations that the Naperville Park District offers. In addition, the Park District invites residents to post comments and/or photos on social media to #ParkItInNaperville about a favorite park, summer activity, fun family memory, or how parks and recreation experiences enrich their lives.  Residents also are encouraged to visit the Park It page at  for ideas for fun, free or low-cost activities during each season of the year.
