Over 21,000 lbs. of Pumpkins Smashed at the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots

Beautiful weather helped attract 413 families to the Naperville Park District's annual Pumpkin Smash on Saturday, November 4 at the Ron Ory Community Garden Plots. Volunteers counted and weighed the pumpkins, while families enjoyed smashing them into the garden soil. The total number of pumpkins dropped off was 1,674 and they weighed in at 21,514 lbs.

The Naperville Park District event was one of more than 100 other pumpkin collections in the Chicago area coordinated by SCARCE, a local environmental organization. Composting pumpkins keeps waste out of the landfill, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and creates a natural fertilizer for our soil.
