Real Plankton!

Did you know that the character Plankton from Spongebob is based on a real planktonic animal - the Copepod (shown above)?

There are even specific group of copepods with one eye, just like Plankton, called Cyclops!

There are two main types of plankton and most of them are microscopic. Phytoplankton are tiny plants and zooplankton are mini animals.

Phytoplankton are the basis of the food chain for aquatic ecosystems just like plants on land are the basis for food chains in woodland and prairies.

Plankton are found in the ocean and in freshwater like our pond.

We collected plankton, using a plankton net, during our Naperville Plays event and searched for copepods, water fleas, and dinoflagulettes.

Some animals, like fish, spend part of their lives as plankton. To learn more about plankton check out this video.
