National Reptile Awareness Day

Some of you may wish that reptiles, like snakes, weren't part of our world!

  • But all reptiles, which include snakes, turtles, lizards, crocodiles, and alligators, are an important, and healthy, part of Earth's ecosystems.

  • Snakes, for instance, are great at controlling rodent populations.

  • National Reptile Awareness Day is a perfect day to learn more about these amazing cold-blooded animals whether you like them a lot, or aren't too crazy about them!

What you can do:

  • Share your knowledge of reptiles with others.
  • Visit a nature center or zoo to learn more about the reptiles housed there.
  • Donate your time, or some money, to a zoo or wildlife center that advocates for reptiles.
  • Visit a local park or forest preserve to view important local reptile habitats - woodlands, prairies and wetlands.
  • Clean up litter in your neighborhood, local park or forest preserve so that reptiles don't get injured by discarded items such as fishing lines or metal cans.
