Leave Us on the Ground!

Leaf "litter" is valuable to animals and us!

  • Many butterfly and moth species overwinter as chrysalises or cocoons within the leaf litter.
  • Beneficial insects lay their eggs on leaves.
  • Birds rely on insects to feed their young in the spring while many mammals forage in leaf litter for food through the fall and winter.
  • Squirrels, chipmunks and other mammals use leaves to build their nests or line their dens.
  • Earthworms eat decomposing leaves and turn them into rich soil.
  • Leaf litter can be used as free fertilizer and mulch for our landscape beds.
