Scotty Boyajian, one of the players on Springbrook Golf Course’s first PGA Junior League team in 2013, is now competing regularly on the state and regional tournament circuit. Scotty won the Illinois Junior Golf Association’s Players Challenge #3 at Pheasant Run on June 22-23, scoring 69 and 72.

“These are fantastic scores,” said Todd Russell, golf professional at Springbrook Golf Course and Scotty’s golf teacher and trainer. “In the past four years Scotty has worked hard to develop his golf game and is now seeing the results of his dedication.”

Boyajian, 16, will be a junior at Metea Valley High School this fall, where he has played varsity golf since his freshman year.  He plays high school golf in the fall and maintains a heavy tournament schedule in the spring and summer.

Golf Lessons and Fitness Training at Springbrook Golf Course

He has taken golf lessons from Todd Russell for four years and is in his third year of golf fitness training at the Brooks Golf Academy Training Center, also with Russell, who is a nationally certified fitness instructor.

“Scotty trains twice a week at the Golf Training Center, where we work on flexibility and range of motion, building core strength and lower body strength,” explained Russell. “This targeted fitness training, along with his growth in height, resulted in gaining club head speed and power in his swing.”

Scotty has been golfing since the age of nine, first taught by his grandfather. “He (his grandfather) did a good job teaching Scotty the basics,” said Todd. “When he started with us, he was really advanced in knowing the etiquette, strategy and equipment.  He just needed technical swing instruction.”

When asked why he likes the game of golf and what keeps him going, Scotty said that it’s fun and something that he can do with his friends.  Some of his golf friends are from his years on the PGA Junior team at Springbrook and others are from the tournament circuit.

What’s Next?

Scotty is looking forward to another season competing for Metea and the next tournament challenge is always around the corner.  This summer he will continue to play in tournaments through the Illinois Junior Golf Association the Mid-American Junior Golf Tour, which is described as “designed for exceptionally talented junior golfers throughout the Midwest ages 12-18, and the American Junior Golf Association, a national organization.
