Native Plants and Streambank Stabilization

Native plants work to prevent water pollution by absorbing rain water and then filtering it before it leaves the site. They also help hold soil in place along stream banks, preventing erosion of soil into the stream. At Pioneer Park, the Naperville Park District planted wetland plants along the ephemeral stream near the new interpretive center.  Other native plants were planted along the parking lot and in the dry detention basin.  A group of 30 volunteers assisted with planting in the detention basin both in the spring of 2012 and again in 2013.

At Pioneer Park, wetland plants are being installed along the banks of the West Branch of the DuPage River, to help stabilize the shoreline and to help absorb and filter stormwater before it enters the river.
